Painting Jan Baptist Weenix returns to Dresden

After almost 80 years, a painting by Jan Baptist Weenix (1621-1660) has finally returned to the place where it belongs: the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. In a ceremonial act on the 23rd of October, Willem Jan Hoogsteder presented the dune landscape to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, in the presence of the Dutch ambassador Ronald van Roeden, the Minister-President of Saxony Michael Kretschmer and the Saxon Minister for Culture Barbara Klepsch. The painting had been missing since the end of World War II. Willem Jan Hoogsteder acquired the painting to donate it to the SKD.

Publication Adriaen van de Venne dedicated to John Hoogsteder

On the eve of the exhibition ‘The inverted world of Adriaen van de Venne’ in the Zeeuws Museum (September 30, 2023 to April 21, 2024), Edwin Buijsen presented his new book ‘Ick soeck en vind’ on the versatile artist Adriaen van de Venne. He dedicated the book to John Hoogsteder, who passed away on the 8th of October 2022. His son, Willem Jan Hoogsteder, received the first copy of the publication in Middelburg.

Hoogsteder Museum Foundation celebrates 10 years

This year the Hoogsteder Museum Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary. The foundation was founded in 2013 on the 400th wedding anniversary of the Winterqueen, Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1662). Prof. Dr. Nadine Akkerman presented her book ‘De Hartenkoningin – Het leven van Elizabeth Stuart’ at Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder together with publisher Querido Facto.

Escher exhibition in Museum Bredius

This year it was 125 years ago that the artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was born. In honor of this Escher year, Museum Bredius organised an exhibition dedicated to presenting optical illusion in art long before Escher. Hoogsteder loaned a trompe l’oeil painting by Cornelis Biltius (1653-1686) to the exhibition.
