Willem van Aelst was Rachel Ruysch’s teacher. He taught her how to compose a bouquet in a vase. Allowing some of the flowers and leaves to droop over the side of the vase and by showing others from the back, the bouquet acquires a rounded shape which contributes significantly to the realistic, tangible effect.
