Jacob Jordaens recorded the festivities of 6 January in several large canvases. For his depictions he invariably chose the moment when the king starts the party by taking the first sip. Jordaens located his festivities in opulently furnished interiors. This preliminary drawing was intended for the engraver Paulus Pontius, who produced a print of the scene.
