Bredius acquired Mathieu Dubus’s Mountainous Landscape for his collection in 1939. He was unique in recognising the artistic qualities of this then little-known painter. Apparently, he valued the ‘unusual’ and ‘avant-garde’ elements in his work. Perhaps he also noticed the similarities with the landscapes by Hercules Segers.
