Tönning 1623 - 1678 Friedrichstadt
Canvas, 85 x 66 cm
Painted circa 1660
Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder, The Hague
Flora was the goddess of flowers and spring. Naturally, therefore, young women loved to have their portrait painted as the personification of this mythological figure. It was a perfect way of expressing youth and innocence. The gentle contours (sfumato), the structure of the hands and clouds, the highlights on the dress and the young woman’s expression reveal the painter to have been Jurriaen Ovens. The work is enclosed in an original seventeenth-century wooden frame with floral motifs. Since the lady is depicted as Flora, it is possible that the frame was specially made for the picture.
