Contrast between dark and light is a key element in the composition of this painting. The boundary follows a diagonal line indicated by small objects lying on the floor. The main figure is also standing on this line: the officer blowing the trumpet. Another figure appears on the left in the semi-darkness whose function in the composition is to accentuate the sense of depth.
