Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder are father and son – John and Willem Jan.
Drs Willem Jan Hoogsteder (b. 1959) has been the owner-director of the company since 1989. He studied art history at Utrecht University and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and obtained his doctoral degree in 1987.

John Hoogsteder (b. 1931) has been dealing in art since the late 1950s. He sold paintings to many an international museum and was instrumental in building important private collections. He was co-founder of the Museum Bredius Foundation and as curator of the museum recently staged the exhibition Connoisseurship: Bredius, Jan Steen and the Mauritshuis.
He was the longest serving Old Master paintings expert (over 20 years) on the Tussen Kunst en Kitsch television show. John Hoogsteder was appointed Officer in de Orde van Orange-Nassau and received an Ere-Penning (honorary medal) from the city of The Hague.
Drs Emilie den Tonkelaar (b. 1984) joined the team in 2009.
She studied art history at Leiden University and completed her research masters there in 2008 with a thesis on seventeenth-century artist Willem van Swanenburgh. She completed internships at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Kunsthandel Laurentius in Middelburg and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
Drs Karin Hoogsteder – van der Weiden (b. 1963) works at Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder since 2000.
She studied art history at Leiden University, where she wrote her thesis on the still life painter Balthasar van der Ast. Previously she worked as specialist of Old Master paintings for Glerum auction house in The Hague.
